Congratulations on your new Tesla Model Y! In this post, I’ll go over what to check in your Tesla Model Y to ensure you cover everything that needs to be fixed, before it’s too late.  Typically, Tesla gives you 100 miles, or 3 days, to submit a service request for Tesla to fix cosmetic issues (however, this is subject to change and variable, so check with your service advisor).

What to Bring

  • Payment (via Tesla phone app)
  • Proof of insurance (upload onto Tesla phone app)
  • Drivers license
  • Phone 
  • This checklist & pen
  • Trade in vehicle with keys (if applicable)
  • Tesla phone app (downloaded and logged in)
  • Positive mindset (no car is perfect)

Verify Pre-Delivery Vehicle Records

  • Ensure correct full name on paperwork 
  • Ensure correct address on paperwork
  • Make sure your VIN number matches that on your paperwork
  • Verify price is correct, including pricing of any added upgrades 
  • Verify configuration is what you configured 
    • You can also view this information by going to the Tesla screen -> Car icon on bottom left -> Software

EXTERIOR

Start by inspecting the exterior, from front to back. 

Exterior - Front

  • Paint
    • Check for scratches, marks, abrasions, dents
    • Hood
    • Front bumper and underneath bumper
  • Panels
    • Use finger as a guide; check for abnormal gaps or misalignments
    • Hood (if a gap is present, can the hood still open/close normally?) 
    • Headlights (are they flushed?) 
    • Front bumper & underneath
  •  Turn on Lights
    • On the Tesla screen, Car icon (bottom left corner) -> Lights
      • Headlights 
      • High beams
      • Emergency lights 
      • Daytime running lights (are they equally bright and even?) 
      • Small yellow dot light
    • Any condensation in lights?
    • Any loosening (push on edge of lights) 
  • Front trunk (aka Frunk)
    • Open front trunk (via Tesla display screen)
      • Check for tow eye hook
      • Check for drain plug
      • Check that LED light inside works
      • Examine weather seals (any loosening or tears?) 
      • Examine hinges (any paint damage?)
    • Close front trunk
      • Do NOT slam frunk (close gently using 2 hands on each side and press down)
  • Windshield
    • Any cracks? 
    • Check for proper windshield wiper installation
  • Cameras
    • Any condensation?
    • Windshield front camera
    • Front bumper camera
  • Roof glass panel
    • Inspect for alignment, cracks, distortion

Exterior - Sides

  • Paint
    • Door panels & underneath
  • Panels (any gaps or misalignment)
    • Each door to wheels, and wheels to body
    • Charge port (is it flush?)
  • Pillars (any scratches, dents?)
    • A, B, C pillars
  • Cameras
    • Left and Right B pillars
    • Left and Right side repeaters
  • Side Mirrors
    • Inspect trim (any paint damage?)
    • Ensure there’s an outline around inside of mirror (for auto-dimming feature)
  • Doors
    • Door handles (equally flush / recessed?)
    • Door trim (anything loose?)
    • Does charge port open/close easily?
  • Windows
    • Windows roll up/down slightly when opening/closing the door
    • Any scratches, distortions or cracks?
  • Wheels & Rims
    • Correct wheels / rims that you configured
    • Inspect  Rims
      • Check for all 4 valve stem covers
    • Plastic fender (above tires)

Exterior - Rear

  • Paint
    • Trunk
    • Rear bumper & underneath (any scrapes or damage?)
    • Roof
  • Panel (gaps, misalignments)
    • Glass roof
    • Rear lights flush with hood & panels
    • Trunk
  • Light
    • Tail lights (turn on emergency lights to test)
      • Equal on both sides
      • Any condensation or damage?
    • Brake lights
      • Equal on both sides
      • Any condensation or damage?
  • Camera
    • Any condensation?
  • Rear bumper
    • Any scrapes, dents?
  • Badging
    • Ensure “TESLA” lettering present
    • “Dual motor” (if applicable)
    • Launch badging (if applicable)

INTERIOR

Interior - Doors & Seats

  • Front Side Doors
    • Open/close doors (any weird sounds, any difficulties with open/close?)
    • Door jams near hinges (paint issues?)
    • Door seal around entire door (detaching, rips, tears?)
      • It is normal to have a hole for better seal, water etc)
    • Inspect for stains, abrasions
    • Ensure windows go up/down smoothly
    • Gently test both manual door releases (lever above to window buttons) 
    • Check door latch & window button lights
    • RGB lighting uniform
  • Front Seats
    • Interior seat upholstery & seatbelts (stains, tears)
    • Test seat belt function
    • Move seat in all directions (any squeaking?)
    • Test lumbar support (driver seat only)
    • Check lights
      • Driver seat: dome, footwell,  puddle lights
      • Passenger seat: dome, footwell, puddle lights
    • Ensure floor mats are present
  • Rear Side Doors
    • Open & Close doors (open easily? any sounds?)
    • Door jam near hinges 
    • Door seal around entire door
    • Inspect for stains/abrasions
    • Test windows up/down
    • Check door latch & window button lights
    • Check emergency door release (lift tab, pull yellow string)
    • RGB lighting uniform
  • Rear Seats
    • Interior seat upholstery & seatbelts (stains, tears)
    • Rear seats aligned? 
    • Check seat belt function
    • Recline / Fold rear seats (button on side of seat & on rear screen display)
    • Check lights
    • Check coat hanger open/close
    • Ensure floor mats present
    • Rear screen display (cracks, distortion)

Interior - Front

  • Side Mirrors
    • Tesla screen -> Car icon bottom left -> Controls
    • Ensure both mirrors can fully adjust
    • Ensure mirrors open/close easily
  • Rear Mirror
    • Inspect for cracks, distortions
    • Ensure mirror adjusts 
  • Sun visor
    • Inspect for stains, tears
    • Ensure opens/closes, extends outwards
    • Check vanity mirror lights
    • Test manual gear shifter (press foot on brake, touch, P/N/R/D should light up )
  • Dashboard
    • Inspect for defects, alignment, gaps
    • RGB lighting uniform 
  • Center Console
    • Test connectivity of wireless phone chargers
    • Test connectivity of USB-C ports
    • Test connectivity of 12V
  • Display Screen
    • Any error messages?
    • Inspect screen for stratches, cracks
      • Car icon -> Display -> “Screen Clean Mode,” which turns the screen black, making it easier to inspect for defects
    • Test for screen responsiveness
      • Toy box -> Sketchpad -> Use your finger to ensure screen is responsive and ensure that there is no phantom touches
  • Glove Box
    • Open glove box (Car icon on bottom left -> Controls -> Glove box)
    • Ensure USB stick is provided (for sentry mode & dashcam footage)
    • Check for J1772 adapter (may be located elsewhere)
  • Climate
    • On Tesla screen, touch the temperature to get to climate
    • Turn on heater and AC to max 
    • Test biodefense mode 
    • Test oscillating fan feature
    • Test that airflow height is adjustable (move finger up/down)
    • Test rear seats airflow 
    • Test driver and front passenger seat heated/cooled function
    • Test heated steering wheel
  • Speakers
    • Check that music streaming & radio work
    • Check inside speakers (go to Music)
      • Max out the Bass & Sub to ensure no sound cracking / distortion
      • Move balance to all 4 corners to check each one
    • Check outside speakers
      • Go to Toybox -> Emissions
      • Put fart mode outside the car to test the speaker
  • Cameras
    • Ensure front, both side and rear cameras work and visibility is clear (tap camera icon)
  • Steering Wheel
    • Inspect (any defects)
    • Adjust steering wheel in all directions (car icon -> Controls)
    • Honk horn
    • Check steering wheel control lights
    • Test voice command
    • Test windshield wipers
    • Test windshield wiper fluid (hold down wiper button)
  • Gear Stalks
    • Test turn signals 
  • Headliner
    • Inspect for stains, smudges, marks
    • Inspect for alignment, loosening, sagging

Interior - Rear

  • Open/close trunk (any irregular noise?)
    • Ensure trunk opens/closes and latches properly with auto-close button
    • Ensure trunk opens/closes partially if you press the trunk button or push trunk down during open/close
  • Inspect hinges 
  • Inspect weather seals
  • Fold down rear seats electronically (button located on Left side)
  • Check lights on each side
  • Inspect rear trunk wells
  • Check for tesla front license plate mount
  • Test 12-Volt DC receptable (left side)
  • Check for Trunk Parcel shelf 

Connectivity

  • Keycards (2)
    • Test each keycard to ensure it works
      • Place over driver side B pillar to lock/unlock the Tesla
      • Place over cellphone charger pad to drive
  • Pair your smartphone to your Tesla via Bluetooth
    • On Tesla screen, tap the Bluetooth Icon

Charging

  • Charge port
    • Ensure charge port opens/closes properly and is aligned properly
    • Ensure indicator light turns on

      • White  = Ready to charge

      • Blue solid =  Scheduled to charge

      • Blue blinking = Preparing to charge (takes a few seconds, be patient)

      • Green blinking = Charging ongoing

      • Green solid = Charge complete 

      • Orange = Not plugged in correctly, re-align 

      • Red = Error 

      • RAINBOW = Easter egg,  pressing the button 10x 

  • Test Various Connectors
    • J1772 (most common non-Tesla charger)
    • NEMA 14-50
    • CCS adapter (for faster charging at places like Electrify America, EV Go)
    • Tesla Supercharger 
    • Tesla home charger

Post - Inspection

  • Verify that your car was marked as “delivered” in Tesla’s network
  • Keep copies of all documentation (ex Motor vehicle purchase agreement, DMV forms)
  • Submit a service request via Tesla phone app for fix/finish issues (check with your service advisor when this must be done by)
  • ENJOY YOUR CAR!!!
