The Tesla Model Y is a 5-seater vehicle, but you can upgrade it to 7 seats. There are many similarities between the two, but a few key differences. The Tesla Model Y – 7-seater is currently a $3,000 upgrade, and comes with 2 extra seats in the 3rd row.

I also created a Youtube Video reviewing the Tesla Model Y – 7 Seater, check it out if you’re interested.

Who is the Tesla Model Y - 7 Seater for?

The Tesla Model Y – 7-seater is most practical for families with kids or small/medium sized adults

What's in the 3rd Row?

  • 2 smaller seats (fits a 5’3 adult)
  • 2 cupholders in the center
  • 2 USB-C ports
  • Small arm rests on the sides
  • Adjustable headrests
  • No air vents or lighting

How to Access the 3rd Row?

To access the 3rd row, bring the 2nd row seats forwards and up using a powered button.

For a large sized adult like myself (6’3″), it’s a bit of a squeeze to get in and out of the 3rd row. In the picture below, I’m clearly struggling to get out.

The 2nd and 3rd row seats do fold down which is great if you need extra storage space and don’t need the seats.

Difference in Storage from Tesla Model Y - 5 vs 7 Seater

In the Tesla Model Y 5 seater, there are 2 bottom trunk wells, which provides plenty of storage space.

In the 7 seater, there is no 2nd trunk well, because the seats take up that space.

When the 3rd row is in use, you do lose quite a bit of storage space in the trunk and it is difficult to fit a standard sized stroller in the trunk.

What’s the same in the Tesla Model Y - 5 vs 7 Seater?

The exterior is the same. There is no change in dimensions.

The Front row and 2nd rows are the same.

Storage space.  The front trunk and 1st trunk storage well are the same. When the 3rd row seats are down, the trunk space is the same

Does the Tesla Model Y - 7 Seater Fit Adults?

I’m 6’3 when I sit in the 3rd row, the leg room was tight, but headspace was non-existent. I was not able to sit up properly, and my head was against the ceiling.

My wife is 5’3” and she has plenty of legroom and headspace, when sitting in the 3rd row.

You can also fit a child-seat in the 3rd row. However, it may be uncomfortable getting the child in and out of the seat.

In the heat, the hatch roof gets hot and because there’s no air vents in the 3rd row, passengers in the 3rd row may get extra warm. In this case, it would be helpful to ceramic tint the hatch roof.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I think the Tesla Model Y – 7 Seater is practical for families with children. My friends have had their 7 seater for 6 months now, and use the 3rd row regularly!
